Qualities in Evolved Relating

by Chris Bourne –
The Consciousness Shift is Causing Untold Pressure. People are unwinding, unfolding and breaking free from eons of constraint. It’s a truly wonderful movement to behold but it’s a double edged sword too.

In many cases it’s generating untold pressure within families and relationships: it’s causing great friction and sometimes even tearing them apart. What can we do about this? I feel strongly in my heart we need to redefine the very nature of relationship:

Redefining Relationships

Classic Archetypal Relationships

Consider for a moment some of the classic archetypal relationships like marriages, partnerships, parent-child, friends and work colleagues. These are classic stereotypes that have been fixed quite rigidly in our collective consciousness, cemented by eons of conditioning.
What do these relationship archetypes do to our soul?
To me, the soul arises from the inner void of pure presence. In enlightened states – which we’re all moving towards – the soul is highly spontaneous. It flows like the wind through the trees and although has consistency, is never completely predictable. It flows according to the myriad of possibility within our consciousness landscape.
Prior to this state of course, there is the conditioning of the ego to overcome. The ego builds loops of conditioned programming based on our upbringing and the dogmatic beliefs within society. We take on either controller or victim type mentality (or a mixture of both). Each behaviourism is like a computer program, it has a purpose and a need to run. All it requires is someone else to press the button. We end up living in co-dependant emotional and psychological states.

Working with the Law of Attraction

We’ve formed internally fixed ideas and notions about how our relationships with people should be. These are not just conscious thoughts however. I’m speaking of an inner consciousness landscape that impacts our lives but for many, cannot even be seen or touched. They’re not looking in the right place.
That’s why embracing The Law of Attraction is so beneficial to us. We draw to ourselves the mirror: one which not only reflects how we are, but also how we could be. The mirror activates all kinds of inner buttons – like that of blame for example: “why are you doing this to me?” is the classic cry.
The problem is that soul’s are working towards enlightenment- total freedom of expression and liberation. They don’t want to be put on show like some bird of paradise and simply admired, they yearn to escape the cage and fly freely.

Opening Pandora’s Box

What I’ve frequently noticed in marriages and partnerships for example, is the challenge of one partner accelerating or having a breakthrough, whilst the other remains temporarily constant. It can place inordinate amounts of stress within a fixed ‘relationship’.

If we get up one morning expecting our partner to be exactly how they were yesterday, speaking to them and treating them as some kind of fixed identity that we rotate around, then in effect, a prison of consciousness is being created to either stifle the unfolding soul or causing it to rebel.

You can’t close the Pandoras box once it is opened!

It’s very similar in parent child relationships. My own parents struggled greatly to come to terms with my awakening and evolution. However, by being profoundly honest about how I was now feeling, and working to be as compassionate as possible, but without compromising my soul, they did eventually come to at least accept me, as I am, even if they don’t fully understand.
And of course in being totally authentic, we provide the possibility for others to see their truth too. If we’re always living according to their expectations, then the mirror we’re supposed to provide is tainted and so we’re actually disempowering them, because we remove the possibility of an accurate reflection…
“Mirror mirror on the wall, aren’t I the fairest of them all?”
Well actually, you probably need to peel away a few layers first!
I’ve also experienced the dynamic from the other side. Where I’ve allowed myself to be seen and defined simply as “Dad”, it’s come with all kind of limiting expectations within the child that I simply couldn’t live up to. Yes I feel compassionately responsible, but I find my soul naturally challenges situations where another would become dependent upon me. Not that I don’t support them, but love does not smother, it empowers and liberates.

If you love someone, set them free!

In one of my three paternal/child ‘relationships’, which was at the time was struggling for true empathy and understanding, we jointly ditched the word “Dad”. I encouraged my son to call me Chris and to embrace me exactly as he found me, without expectation.

Likewise, I allowed myself to see him less of a son and to address him as I found him. I can tell you it had a deeply profound effect, like switching from night to day. Any expectations (including karma on his part) wonderfully floated away like a helium balloon with the “Dad” label attached.

Although we are both very different – in many ways like chalk and cheese – we have come to totally accept each other the way we are. It’s taken all of the stress out of our relationship and now we have a fantastic mutual ‘relating’ situation that honours both.

By ditching the labels, it means we are coming closer together. It melts my heart!

The new relating

My first marriage ended because we grew quickly apart. I don’t see this as a ‘bad’ thing. I don’t see relationships in the ’till death us do part’ manner. I believe we have sacred contracts to work out with one another. Once the lessons have been learned, either the relationship will evolve and grow or the path of the souls will part and each go separate ways to pastures new.
When I came into relationship the second time, with my soul mate, I can openly say it was with some trepidation. I had discovered blissful freedom. I didn’t want to be constrained again. I simply knew all souls were meant to be free. I remember taking myself off into nature one day, having had a challenging time, pondering my new relationship, when the following realisation popped into my heart…

“Rigid relationships are as redundant as building structures on shifting sand. The sand has no relationship with the sea, rather it relates to the ebb and flow of the waves as and when they choose to kiss the shoreline.” –Openhand

Wow! It was like a bolt from the blue. Instantly I could comprehend how to be in this relationship: that it should be fluid and flowing; there should be no expectation; there should be space and openness; there should be total acceptance and embracing of where the other person is at. It means you can truly connect with the other, at a deep soul level. It means you can love them unconditionally. It means you can love them more!
Furthermore, such openness in our relating, is a powerful catalyst for your own evolution. No longer can you rely upon the tired excuses of yesterday, you have to be alive to the moment, vibrant, attentive, empathic and above all, open to change.

Essential qualities in evolved relating

So how might we attain such openness within our ‘relationships’?

Seven key qualities spring to mind…

  • Core splitting honesty: make no mistake, if we’re truly going to commit to the spiritual path, then we will be tested within relationships. Desperately holding things together by belts and braces is just not going to hold. We have to be core splittingly honest with each other. If you truly love someone, don’t they deserve to hear the truth from you?
  • Compassion: speaking our truth is fundamentally essential. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do so gently and with compassion – especially if ‘today’s news’ is challenging. It is in the crucible of such inner fire, we can truly burn away the dross, such that compassion naturally unfolds its wings.
  • Openness: we must learn to be open to the fluid truth of the moment. Being in evolving, close relationships is sometimes just like being caught between the polarity of two magnets. If you hold a rigid position and you’re not in profound truth, it can tear you apart. So we must be open to the tidal flows of feeling and emotion, always looking for the mast of centred openness.
  • Unconditionality: the soul is integral and whole. How can it be otherwise when it is an experiential reflection of the One Life? So freedom and space must be given to each. We must learn to adapt to ever changing moods, intuit the relating that is being called for and unconditionally give ourselves to that expression.
  • Courage and bravery: to be this way is going to take a lot of courage and bravery. Your soul will call you to say and do things the effects of which, the ego will greatly fear – “what impact is that going to have?” The ego will be playing the chess game, frequently wondering what the outcome will be. We must have the courage and conviction to confront the ego, always coming from our highest truth.
  • Self completeness: you’re in relationship – a relating situation – but it’s only truly going to work if you are being whole and complete within the engagement. Yes we’re giving of ourselves, but we must first be ourselves in order to give! It’s about finding love in the mirror, but not loosing ourselves within it. We must walk the blade edge of self completeness but fully expressed.
  • Empathy, acceptance and understanding: and here’s the other side of the self completeness coin. We’re not going to have meaningful and fulfilling relationships if we’re not fully present in them! An evolved relating experience invites us to unveil ever deeper levels of feeling empathy. The more we can feel the other, the more we feel ourselves and the more a mutually fulfilling energetic feedback loop is created. Both parties are lifted into a state that is so much more than the separate parts. Empathy, acceptance and understanding is the golden chalice from which both can drink.

Spaces in the togetherness

So redefining our relationships into “evolved relating” offers enormous potential for evolutionary growth. The expansion causes continual confrontation of society’s dogma. It’s like being in a crucible, where diamonds are forged.
Now, I greatly value and cherish the relating experiences in my life. And I find that by committing to my truth and allowing the other to honour their’s, means that I feel more committed within these engagements rather than less. Paradoxically, the new openness generates greater respect, unconditionality and commitment to one another.
Just as a wheel is defined by the space between the spokes, it’s the space within relationships that forges the togetherness:

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.” –Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

Mastery of the Expanded Self

by Chris Bourne –
To truly realise the depth and majesty of our expanded self, we have to master the direct confrontation of the moment. It’s all about performing inner alchemy. There’s essentially two forms of consciousness that make up our existential being: the separation consciousness that forms the bodymind, and the unity consciousness that forms the soul. If you include various disruptive energies of society’s matrix, everything we experience from thoughts, to emotions and feelings are caused by the interaction of these various flows of consciousness. How might ‘we’ – as presence – be able to positively influence the internal dynamic?…

Creating your own reality?

Some speak of shaping the thoughts in order to master beingness but to me, this is simply a case of the tail wagging the dog. The same goes for ‘creating your own reality’. Sure, we do create our own reality but what do we mean exactly by ‘our’? In most cases the identity doing the manifestation is just a more subtle form of ego – a spiritual identity – that wants to control the situation in some particular way because it cannot accept what is already unfolding.
We are already shaping and creating everything we experience.

Either the true self – the soul – is shining through and creating harmonious experiences or else the false self is influencing the show, by resistance to what’s currently happening, denial or just plain insensitivity. We might feel a creative impulse for something to happen, only for the flow to get derailed by internal eddy currents of life’s conditioning.

In which case you can’t simply ‘paper over the cracks’, by manipulating the outer pieces on the game board without first uncovering and unwinding what’s really happening inside. To do so, is simply to perpetuate the disharmony through our lives.

Even though the circumstances may change – our jobs, relationships or location – the patterns remain the same. Instead, we need to look deeply into the outer mirror we’re already creating.

This includes our most intense and intimate feelings towards it, no matter how challenging or painful. Then there’s a requirement to notice the blind spots, the grey areas in these points of attachment where presence closes down and gets drawn into the fray through identification.

Grasping the hot coals

The only way out is through. We have to feel the fullness of these retractions from the moment. You have to grasp the hot coals and feel the heat before you drop them.

If you retract in the face of the heat or the pain or the heartache, be it emotional, physical or mental, then in that moment, you have reconfirmed your identification with the heat and with that your separation from the all that is. You have made yourself a victim of the sense of separation and crystalised that as your reality.

The key is transcendence:

Feeling through the heat of the moment until the coals define you no longer. You become the heat, the pain, the tension, the discomfort and soften into it.

You become so totally at-one with it, that you no longer build internal references, structures and judgments around the situations. It is in these totally lucid moments you become absolutely authentic and free.

You have transcended the limitation of identification and dropped into the void of infinite potential. From here, anything can happen. The authentic flow of the soul ignites, fueled by the unstoppable force of the universe.

To master such transcendence is to increase our inner intimacy – to bring absolute attention into our bodily field, to know when we retract, resist and deny. Bringing presence into these blind spots automatically begins to unwind them, liberating the soul as a free flowing spontaneity through the moment. There is nothing that feels better, more harmonious or complete. This is truly living.

The path to Bodhidharma

It is the Openhand Approach to life and I’ve found it very aligned with some of the ancient eastern teachings such as that of the monk Bodhidharma. I came across his work some years ago through a lovely synchronicity and felt to share a glimpse here…
In the old days in China there was a priest called Master Tozan. A monk asked him “how can we escape from this severe heat and cold?” This is not just a question about severe heat and cold. It is a question about the reality we are always facing – a melancholy and difficult reality, a reality that is full of suffering.

People are sick and in pain: people have lost their homes in disasters and wars and have nothing in which to believe any longer and are suffering in their despair. For those whose belongings have all been destroyed, their refuge in the material world has been shown to be empty and meaningless. This kind of pain is always occurring all around us.

Master Tozan answered the monk, “You have to go where there is no hot and no cold!”
The monk continued, “Where is that place where there is no hot or cold? Where is that true place of refuge for the mind?”
The priest answered, “When it is hot, become that heat completely! When it is cold, become one with that cold completely and totally! When it is painful, become that pain completely and totally, and when you are miserable, become that misery totally and completely! In the very midst of that, go beyond all the thoughts you hold in your mind, let go of all the ideas of good or bad or gain or loss – let go of all of these thoughts – and from there grasp that place of your very own vivid life energy! That which directly experienes that ‘ouch’ – feel that life energy directly, grasp that life energy that feels that pain and sorrow.”

More important than finding a place out of pain and suffering, or trying to find a place where there is no pain or suffering, is to go directly to that place where the pain and suffering are being experienced, to go where you feel that pain and sadness directly and totally. Touch that life energy directly and with your own experience. Use that actual direct experience which you have grasped as your base, and stand up strong and firm. This is how the master answered the monk.

Phoenix from the ashes

Of course this advice is not just for the metaphoric physical feeling of hot and cold. We may apply it to every aspect of our lives. Especially in relationships for example where we might suffer emotional or psychological trauma.
As it’s happening, we must not deny it, but rather go into the very heart of the contraction and become as one with it – to soften into it – in the way described above. Then the bubble of identification bursts, the void of silence is touched, the soul rises like a pheonix from the ashes and a new, more harmonious reality takes shape.
Finally, the majesty of the expanded self is realised.

2012 and Beyond

by Chris Bourne –

Beginning of the end or end of the beginning?

Increasingly people are asking about our views on the prophecies of 2012. What’s going to happen? How will our lives change? Is the world going to come to an end? Here at Openhand we don’t see ourselves as prophets. We all have the capacity to change and if we live our lives according to what we desire, expect or fear in the future, then our consciousness is increasingly removed from the only thing of value that we really possess – the moment of now. It is only by being fully present in the moment that we can truly effect or change things according to our intended destiny. The interesting paradox is that when we’re being fully present, we unfold into multiple dimensions of reality; we gain access to a wider truth, one where the foundations of 2012 have already being laid. So what is really going on in our expanded reality?

Gaia shifts

There are many widely varying views as to what will happen in 2012 – that’s because we each filter reality according to the degree of inner clarity we have. Some have more distorting filters than others – the key is to always process anything we read, hear or experience through our own minds and hearts. If something resonates, we’ll simply feel it as truth. If this happens, there’s no need to memorise or hold onto it as some kind of belief system, we will simply unfold that aspect of truth through everything we do. So I trust you will approach this article in a similar way. See what resonates with you, allow it to unfold a more complete version of your own truth. That said, let’s continue…

From my perspective Gaia is undergoing a major shift in her own consciousness. She is a multi-dimensional, highly evolved being – much more so than ourselves – and is able to hold her consciousness through multiple dimensions. Currently she is undergoing an entirely natural evolutionary transition which will eventually shift the centre of her consciousness from the Third Dimensional Realm into the Fifth. Is this a prophecy you might ask? Well no actually – at least not in my truth. Consider it this way, Gaia has one foot in this plain of existence and one foot in the higher one. In the third dimension, where we are constrained by linear time, she is taking a step and that step is nearing completion – is it going to complete in 2012? Well that’s what many awakening people are feeling (although I wouldn’t wish to be held to an exact date!).

When she’s completed the transition, she will continue to exist here and now in the third dimension for a given period of time but she will be a fifth dimensional Being. What’s more, a new Earth – more appropriately a “Renewed Earth” will exist in the higher paradigm – it will be 5D Earth.

The Golden Age

Like the multitude of other creatures across the planet, we are being invited to reconnect with the natural flow of the universe and join her there in what many are describing as “The Golden Age”. We do so by processing out our mental, emotional and karmic baggage (just as we’ve described in our book “Gateways of Light”…find out more). Metaphorically speaking, we have to heave over enough ballast in order to ride the thermals into the higher vibration. When we’re freed from the karmic cycle of reincarnation to 3D Earth, then we take on a light body form of existence in the new paradigm. This is the intended evolution and next chapter in the Human story.

So around 2012 Gaia will likely complete this transition but the doorway won’t close then as some are saying – at least not in my truth. To me in fact the opposite is true – the doorway will be fully open. This is a monumental shift in consciousness that’s being invited for our whole planetary system (indeed our galaxy) and we are truly blessed to be here witnessing and taking part in it. However, there will also be increasing turbulence experienced here on 3D Earth both during and after the shift. This is because the lighter vibrational existence is separating from the heavier one which in turn creates a polarity; wherever you have polarity, you have potential energetic difference just like the poles on a battery – to move to the higher plain we actually have to release energy and that’s exactly what Gaia is now doing (at the risk of pushing the environmentalist buttons, although humanity is certainly exacerbating the situation, Global Warming is also entirely natural!).

Turbulent Transition

So we’re likely to witness an increase in natural disasters as her polarity changes – Earthquakes, Tornados, Tsunamis, drought, Forest Fires etc etc. We’re also going to witness increasing metaphorical Tsumanis within our society such as the credit crunch. How is this linked to the shift? Well it’s because of the separation of light from dark in this plain. Anything that is of lower consciousness – of lower truth – is being deeply questioned. To an increasing ascending group consciousness, an outdated system that consumes 10 times more energy than it gives out is simply unsustainable – archaic even – just like the dinosaurs! So to some, (those still attuning to the darkness) it may feel like the end of the world, but in truth, on a global sense, the transition will be a relatively gentle one as Gaia peels off an old skin and puts on a new one.

Of course those that currently control our society will likely use the increasing turbulence and dwindling energy (in this plain) as an excuse to gain greater control (even if they don’t fully appreciate the reasons why its happening). They will point to the failing banking system, peak oil, increased terrorism, water and food shortages as a means to control people greater and greater. Some “prophets” are predicting the emergence of a New World Order similar to that foretold in George Orwell’s 1984 – a Big Brother Society. It is clear to me that Opposing Consciousnes is indeed moving this way, however I don’t believe they will be successful – they are already losing their grip on our evolving consciousness.

An Open Hand

So an open invitation – an openhand – is being extended to us all, to step across and join the Golden Age on 5D Earth. To get there is to process out our inner baggage – the consciousness that limits us. And Gaia is helping us greatly; she is gently but firmly coaxing us towards the higher truth. We’re already seeing the shift effecting life all around us. Are our choices based on efforting, denial and fear…or are they based on surrenderedness, truth and love? As 2012 draws ever near, it’s a question that’s becoming increasingly central to every single choice we make.

Accelerating Enlightenment

by Chris Bourne –

Confronting and dealing with fear – When we step onto our path of soul guided evolution, there is frequently one seemingly unwelcome guest that we’ll be called upon many times to encounter – fear. Fear is what holds us back from realising our full potential in life. It’s what constricts the flow of divine love within us; it dims our inner light. But ALL fear is just a doorway through which to step into a greater expansion. Therefore fear is not to be feared at all but rather embraced as a tool by which to grow. If we can make this internal switch of perception about our fears, we’ll find ourselves accelerating faster and faster into full Enlightenment. So how might we confront and deal with fear?

Nothing but an illusion – I remember once having a powerful dream like experience that helped me understand the true nature of fear. Whilst staying at a friend’s house I suddenly awoke in the middle of the night finding myself being compelled to go downstairs. As I gingerly descended the creaking stairway I suddenly became aware of a powerful, dark and unnerving energy coming from the living room; I just knew there was some kind of entity within.

The closer I got, the more deeply foreboding I felt. My stomach churned, the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end and as my breathing constricted, I was quickly overcome by a rush of nausea. In the terror, movement became restricted and awkward but an inner compulsion somehow carried me forwards and I summoned the nerve to open the door.

As I did so, I was engulfed by an odious stench which left me wretching. All the while though, the inner compulsion – my guiding light – called me onwards and somehow it calmed me down. It was of course my soul calling and its sense of gentle and yet dauntless purpose gave me comfort so I pressed onwards.

As I looked sheepishly around the door, I was taken aghast at what befell my eyes – a hideous apparition filled the centre of the room. It was heaving with dark, dense energy, a compacted mass of hate drawing towards it all light and consuming it within. So hideous was it that I couldn’t bring myself to look at it full on and yet I still couldn’t resist the pull towards it. Clearly my soul was choosing for me to confront my fears.

As I stood right next to it, slowly it turned its head towards me, its blood red eyes engaged mine, its constricting gaze piercing every fibre of my being. I found myself wanting to shrink in its presence so overpowering was its energy. But the quiet inner voice of my soul was seemingly undeterred. I felt like an innocent and helpless lamb in its presence and yet I was not about to be crushed like some fallen petal. I was caused to return the gaze but not with hate…instead with love.

As we fully engaged, waves of realisation began to dawn on me. I knew that for me to experience love within there had to be such energies as this entity I was now confronting. In a Universe that is all one, how can you have one thing without its polar opposite?

Just as I was choosing love, this being had chosen hate so that I and others like me could experience love. Its choice was perhaps the greatest act of love there is. As this realisation landed, I found the love strengthen within me but it wasn’t just for me, I was suddenly able to see past the creature’s hideous outer skin and pierce to the soul within. In that moment, it recognised the love I had for it, something it had clearly not felt in eons of time. Then something truly amazing happened….I sensed a switch being thrown inside it. It could no longer hold onto all the hate and fear; it was no longer possible for it to be so closed down. Its grasp on tightness suddenly released and it exploded before me into multitudinous fragments of white light.

Needless to say, the experience left a powerful and lasting impression on me. Over the coming days many realisations dawned about the nature of fear itself. Particularly that there are two flows of consciousness within the Universe; the flow out from the source to ever greater experiences of separation experienced as increasing separateness, density and isolation – fear. The other is the flow inwards experienced as ever greater lightness, joy and harmony – love.

Fear is the doorway to love – These fear doorways are purposefully designed to push all our inner buttons perfectly because they were created by the perfect creator – our very own higher self! Without these illusions there would be nothing to hold apart the separateness of the Universe and therefore there would be no experience at all – the Universe would suddenly pop like a vast illusionary bubble. So how might we deal with fear? Having encountered fear many times in my life, you might like to try this 10 step approach for dealing with it:

TEN STEP APPROACH

1. Firstly, we must summon the courage to confront our fears whenever and wherever they arise. We might do this by realising that fear is a very special doorway – an opportunity for accelerated growth.

2. If we find the confrontation difficult, we may begin first in a small way confronting all the little fears that life throws up…being late for work, being honest to a partner, approaching the neighbour about something that’s not working for us. As these things arise, don’t procrastinate but resolve to confront them right away.

3. As we summon the will to deal with the issue, ask “what’s the worst possible outcome that could happen here?” and then realising that all is but an illusion, ask “can I be awesomely okay with the worst possible outcome?” remembering even death itself is but a doorway into a greater expansion.

4. When we’ve summoned the courage to confront our fear, notice the impact it may well have on our system. Does the breathing tighten? Do we feel tight in the stomach or solar plexus? Do we find ourselves choking to speak or does our bodily movement become more constricted? Do we find ourselves playing seemingly uncontrollable mind games with an endless array of possible outcomes and scenarios?

5. If any of the above happen, or indeed any other physical symptoms arise, bring attention deep into the core of our being and breathe deeply. Frequently we forget to breathe fully when confronted by fear.

6. Then deal with each physical symptom as it arises. For example if our body becomes constricted, focus on movement engaging a greater fluidity. If the throat or solar plexus tighten, bring attention into them, open and relax in these places and breathe in light.

7. Open to higher guidance and trust that we are being divinely supported in our actions. Remember that we created every experience we’re now having and that there is nothing that we cannot cope with.

8. Follow the guidance, make the choice that confronts the fear and express our highest truth at whatever apparent personal cost.

9. Watch how our actions might invite others to confront their own limitations. Watch for synchronicity supporting our actions or causing inner distortions to be exposed.

10. In the minds eye, visibly step through the doorway marked fear and feel the sense of joy liberation and expansion on the other side.

Key Gateways to Enlightenment

by Chris Bourne –

*1. The first is the recognition that everything in the external world is merely a reflection of something being experienced internally. To step through this gateway, we have to surrender the need to shape external events. We need to realise that the key to our unfolding is the release of energy arising within us – caused by our attachment to external events – so that we may find internal harmony in all circumstances.

*2. The second gateway is the realisation deep within that there is no separation between what is ‘in here’ and what is ‘out there’. In other words, as we step through the gateway we experience unity consciousness. We become the witnesser – the consciousness of the creator in all things. With this comes a sublime feeling of being at one with the whole of creation, as the apparent duality between inner subject and outer object dissolves. There is a liberating blissful feeling when stepping through this gateway and many think they have become enlightened, but while we may be awakened, this is still only a reflection of enlightenment.

*3. The third gateway leads to total liberation. It is stepping out of the illusionary world of experience into absoluteness beyond all experience. It occurs in all of us from time to time, although it is mostly missed. For example, it could be the experience of gardening on a warm summer’s day when time dissolves, and hours later we rediscover ourselves, not realising where the time went. It is so awesomely ordinary that we have great difficulty in accepting that it is the objective of everything we have been seeking and doing throughout our countless lifetimes.

The moment we are ‘looking at’ this experience of freedom and liberation – a ‘non experience’ – is the moment we recreate ‘the witnesser’, and step back out of enlightenment. We step into and out of this third gateway many times, until finally we give up trying to understand it. We surrender trying to experience it and simply settle into full enlightenment. The witnesser becomes witnessing. The experience becomes a normal state of perception without an inner witness seeking or trying to understand what that state of perception is:

To know the truth is to know the self. to know the self is to know what the self is not. To be at one with what the self is and is not… in every moment, is to be enlightened by all things. Then there is no trace of enlightenment, although enlightenment flows through our daily lives endlessly.
